Hybrid Fusion

The project is about establishing a new relationship between geometry, structure, and surfaces, and thus a new methodology for understanding spatial and structural connections.  The focus of this project is to utilize robotic technology in combination with the idea of the ‘half-virtual’ in which the merging of the physical and digital worlds can be used as a tool to investigate architectural strategies, representation, and conventions.
Starting from two identical curvili
near surfaces of different rigidities,
analysis software is used to investigate point patterns and create connections between the surfaces.  The resultant morphology at once links the two surfaces with incredible strength and also creates a uniquely formed fluid space.  A second structural layer represented by tape illustrates the tension between the newly created volumes, while also allowing opportunities to explore opacity variations and tectonic networks between and beyond the two surfaces.
By using robot synchronization to repeat precise actions and cinematic techniques to blur the line between reality and possibility, we are examining opportunities for converging surfaces and three-dimensional structures in unconventional ways.  The logic of typical shell to structure relationships is manipulated to allow for the creation of a hybrid architectural system in which the behavior is neither purely that of a shell nor scaffold, but one in which the two are fused.
